Running Austin

run infoAustin is a good place to run for several reasons: motorists are very courteous, there are a lot of routes you can take, and the terrain variations make it interesting. On most occasions I end up running in the dark of morning and Austin is suited for that because it has adequate lighting and is a relatively safe city, as long as you don’t get between a politician and a camera.

Socially speaking, it is widely acknowledged that Austin is a weird place. As the only liberal outpost in a very conservative state, I’m thinking the only way Austinites can cope is to ignore the mainstream and go their own way. But along with the weirdness there is also button down business, earnest citizens petitioning their government, and 50,000 University of Texas graduates looking for work. Or whatever.

Texas Capitol

Our capitol is bigger than your capitol.

Texas has always had a unique way of combining government and business, and the story of the capitol building is a good example. In the 1800s Texas had no money for construction, so the state traded 3 million acres of far away land for a new capitol building. And got a great one. From the impressive size right down to the details of the door hinges, I’m not sure there is another capitol that can compare.
